30,535 VAT/PAYE registered businesses were operating in Buckinghamshire in March 2025. This represents a 2.1% decrease on the previous year (equivalent to 645 fewer businesses). The business populations of the South East and England grew by 0.1% and 0.4% respectively over the same period.
Most of Buckinghamshire's decrease was driven by a decrease in the micro business population, falling 2.4% on last year. Nevertheless, Buckinghamshire maintains its status as having the highest concentration of micro businesses (<10 employees) of all enterprise regions in England, at 91%.
There were gains in the population of larger businesses in Buckinghamshire, with a 1.2% growth in the number of medium sized businesses (50 to 249 employees).
By sector, there was a net decrease of 405 retail businesses in the year to March 2025, and a net decrease of 275 ‘office administrative and support activities’ businesses. There was a net gain of businesses in sectors such as electricity supply (+45 businesses), motor trades (+35) and film & TV production businesses (+30 businesses).
